While I try to avoid them as much as I can, I’ve often wondered where to draw the line.
Feeling a bit confused, I decided to dig deeper and learn more about what processed foods and additives actually are.

A Closer Look at Processed Foods and Additives

Processed foods are foods made to last longer or save cooking time, such as ready-to-eat meals and processed meats like ham.

Food additives are used to maintain quality and extend shelf life, including coloring agents and sweeteners.

Even everyday Japanese foods like miso and soy sauce are processed, and with salt used as a preservative for centuries, not all processed foods are bad.
Still, some may have potential health effects.

Convenient but Worth Watching: Tips on Processed Foods and Additives

For example, instant cup noodles are a convenient and tasty favorite of mine, but I’m always a little surprised when I check the ingredients and think, “Hmm, that doesn’t look too healthy…”

Basically, only ingredients that meet safety standards are used in each country, and even so, knowing the possible downsides of processed foods and additives makes me feel more comfortable when deciding what to eat.

Completely avoiding processed foods and additives in daily life is not easy.
We want to use convenient products, and we also want to enjoy tasty foods!
So, here are three simple tips I follow to make the most of convenient foods while keeping things balanced.

1. Check Labels and Ingredients

Before buying a product, I quickly look at the ingredient list and additives, and try to choose items that are as simple as possible.
While standards vary by country, the following additives are commonly noted in both Japan and other countries as ones to watch out for.

  • Preservatives: Sorbic acid, Benzoic acid
  • Synthetic colorants: Red, Blue, Yellow
  • Sweeteners: Aspartame
  • Nitrite curing agents: Sodium nitrite

In the U.S., you often see foods labeled “NO MSG,” but in Japan, MSG is usually listed as “amino acids” on ingredient labels.

2. Be Mindful of Portions and Balance

When I eat processed foods, I try to add vegetables, fruits, whole grains, or beans to keep my meals balanced and avoid relying too heavily on processed items.

3.Pay Attention to How Much You Eat

Food additives are considered safe, but too much of anything isn’t ideal. When I eat more processed foods than usual, I adjust at the next meal.

Making Thoughtful Food Choices, Starting Today

Even with processed foods, it’s usually easy to find ones with pretty simple ingredients.
If you have kids, adding some organic or additive-free foods, plus seasonal fruits and veggies, is a great idea.
You don’t have to be perfect, just start making small, thoughtful choices.
