Pacific Mercantile Company: Denver’s Beloved Japanese Market That Truly Feels Like Home

If you’ve ever lived abroad, you know that sudden wave of missing home.
For me, comfort is just a short drive away at a beloved Japanese market in Denver that truly feels like home.
The moment you walk in, there’s a quiet nostalgia in the air and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that instantly makes you feel safe and comfortable.
Let me tell you why this is such a special place.

Over 80 Years of a Japanese Family’s Dedication

When I first moved to Colorado, I learned there was a Japanese market in downtown Denver, and I felt right at home the first time I visited Pacific Mercantile Company.
It’s no wonder. This market has been around for over 80 years and is cherished not only by the Japanese community but also by many locals.

Today, the market is run by the founder’s grandchildren, Jolie and Kyle, who continue to carry on the family’s warmth while keeping the business thriving.
Jolie shared with a big smile that her daughter, Alyssa, is set to take over as the fourth-generation owner.
I’m thrilled to see the family’s legacy continue and can’t wait to see what Alyssa brings to the market.

From Authentic Japanese Flavors to Fresh Sashimi

Inside the market, you’ll find more than just Japanese food.
There are plenty of items that make you say, “Oh, they have this too!”
From fresh fish to unique ingredients from Hawaii and other Asian countries, there’s so much to see that every visit is exciting.

Fresh fish usually arrives every Thursday, and nigiri sushi is available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Bluefin Tuna sashimi has become my favorite way to treat myself.

You’ll also find eggs with rich orange yolks like the ones in Japan, and shiso leaves to go with your sashimi.
And when I see a pumpkin already cut in half, I can’t help but smile at these thoughtful little touches.

Beyond Food: Japanese Goods for Daily Life

The market is also filled with everyday Japanese items, from tableware and tea sets to other unique goods.
With so many authentic Japanese items to choose from, it’s easy to find the perfect gift for someone special.

One Christmas, I gave my family in the U.S. a Japanese knife, and they loved it.
If you’re looking for a gift for someone who loves Japan, you’ll find something special here.

Family-Run and Full of Warmth

Above all, the market’s greatest charm is the warmth you can’t find at a big chain store.
You’ll hear friendly greetings between staff and customers, and even shoppers chat warmly with each other.
If you ever want to experience a little piece of Japan in Denver, be sure to stop by.

Just so you know, right inside the door is a shelf for donating or taking books — feel free to use it!
