Gotokuji’s Lucky Cats: The Legendary Tale

Gotokuji Temple, located in Setagaya, Tokyo, is said to be the birthplace of the “Manekineko,” also known as the “Lucky Cat.” Its legend dates all the way back to the Edo period.

Legend says a lord once followed a beckoning cat into the temple and narrowly escaped a sudden storm, a moment believed to have brought him good luck.
Since then, cats have symbolized good fortune, and today Gotokuji Temple is filled with Manekineko from visitors whose wishes came true.
Gotokuji’s Manekineko Unlike Any Other

Gotokuji’s Manekineko doesn't hold coins like typical lucky cats. Instead, they’re said to bring connections and good fortune to those who live with gratitude.
The World’s Beloved Manekineko

Loved by tourists from overseas and cat lovers, Gotokuji Temple is full of visitors snapping photos with the Manekineko and enjoying their time at the temple.

The Ema (wooden prayer plaques) on the temple grounds are filled with wishes written in various languages. Seeing visitors from all over the world hoping for happiness and meaningful connections here was truly heartwarming.
