Explore Beppu Hell Tour: Efficiently Plan Your Trip and Experience All 7 Hells!

Beppu is located in the northern part of Oita Prefecture in Japan, situated on the island of Kyushu.
Beppu Onsen is one of the most famous hot spring areas in Japan, often referred to as the best. It is known for having the largest number of hot springs and the highest flow rate of water in the country.

With beautiful mountains, a stunning sea, and wonderful hot springs, I always feel grateful to have grown up in my hometown of Beppu. Every time I return, I’m reminded of its charm.
I’d like to introduce you to the amazing experience of the "Beppu Hell Tour" which you definitely should try!

In the past, places in Beppu where steam, hot mud, and boiling water erupted were called "Hells" due to their dangerous nature. Now, these spots have transformed into popular tourist attractions, and one of the highlights is the "Beppu Hell Tour" which takes you to seven famous locations.

Each hell has its own unique features and beauty. If you plan to visit all of them, it's a great idea to get a common admission ticket for 2,200 yen, which gives you a discount. If you have a car, you can easily visit all seven in just 2 to 3 hours. There are also guided sightseeing buses available for those who prefer that option.

Let me introduce you to the order of the seven hells you can visit!

01Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell)

This hell is named for its bright cobalt blue color, which looks just like the sea. There are also a shrine and beautiful gardens in the area.

You can see beautiful flowers all year round, with different blooms each season. You can also find colorful water lilies and rare giant water lilies.

It looks just like the sea, but the temperature is 98 °C (208°F) !

02Oniishi Bozu Jigoku (Shaven Monk's Hell)

The bubbling gray hot mud looks like a monk's head, and that's how it got its name.

Walking 4 min

03Kamado Jigoku (Cooking Pot Hell)

At Kamado Hell, there are six different hells from 1-chome to 6-chome. They are smaller in size, but you can enjoy various types of hell in one place.

04Oniyama Jigoku (Crocodile Hell)

Around 70 crocodiles are kept here, and you can see them up close. There's also a pond that uses the heat from the hot springs for the crocodiles.

05Shraike Jigoku (White Pond Hell)

It's a pale blue hell, but it's said that the color changes depending on the time of day and weather. You can leisurely stroll around the beautiful Japanese garden surrounding the pond while enjoying the view of the hell. There's also a tropical fish house that uses the heat from the hot springs.

Walking 20 min or Driving 5 min (2 km)

06Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell)

It's a hell that is a bright red color, truly reminiscent of hell, dyed red by components like iron oxide that are deposited in the pond.

07Tatsumaki Jigoku (Tornado Hell)

It's a geyser that erupts hot water and steam every 30 minutes. While it's small in size, the eruptions are impressive. There are benches for you to patiently wait for the next eruption.

Each hell also has foot baths and other facilities, allowing you to relax while exploring. You can also enjoy unique Beppu foods like onsen eggs, hell-steamed pudding, and hell-steamed vegetables.

Although it's called hell, the landscapes created by nature are mysterious and beautiful, and you can feel the Earth's power in the erupting steam and hot water. Please make sure to visit at least once.
After your tour of the hells, relax in Beppu's hot springs to soothe your travel fatigue.
