I came across a mural that instantly caught my eye. On a street corner in Denver, a pair of eyes seemed to be staring right back at me. The spray paint gives it a bold, powerful feel, yet there’s also a subtle softness to it.
I found myself wondering, “Who is the artist?”
And that question has stayed with me ever since.

A while ago, I first discovered this artist’s work.
I still remember being struck by the intensity of those eyes—so powerful it felt like they could see straight through me.
I noticed the word “川口(Kawaguchi)” written in the piece.
That made me curious, so I looked it up and learned that the artist is Casey Kawaguchi, a Japanese-American artist.

I was captivated by those eyes, as if I might be pulled into them without even realizing it.
There were no words, yet a strong sense of intention and a clear message seemed to live within the work.
Who exactly is this figure that keeps appearing in Casey’s work?

“Spiritual Art Warrior”
He describes the figure as a representation of himself — yet not human.

There is both strength and gentleness in Casey’s work.
Perhaps its depth comes from the way he reflects on his identity and heritage as a Japanese-American artist.
As more “Warriors” appear across Denver, I’m excited to see where his work goes next—an artist to definitely keep an eye on.
