We all have favorite jeans or clothes we can’t let go of, even if they’re worn out or don’t fit anymore. The good news is, I came across a Japanese artisan in Denver who is restoring these cherished pieces.
Whether you want to repair your favorite denim or give it a fresh new twist, this is the place to bring your beloved pieces back to life.
Japanese Artisan in Denver

Flatfield Denim Club opened in August 2024 in downtown Denver’s Sakura Square. Behind every repair and alteration is the careful craftsmanship of a Japanese artisan. The shop blends seamlessly with the workspace, creating a true “workshop” atmosphere filled with vintage pieces and unique remakes.

“I originally wanted to work in the music industry,” says Masaki Hirano, the owner and craftsman of Flatfield Denim Club.
He came to Denver to study at the University of Colorado, planning to follow that dream. After graduation, a chance in alterations changed his plans. That small opportunity soon turned into a passion, leading to a 16-year career.
Craftsmanship and the Tools Behind It

The first thing you notice in the shop is a row of unique sewing machines. Masaki carefully selects the right one for each task, and every stitch reflects his craftsmanship.
Among them is a rare Union Special. Its distinctive finish has gained loyal fans, and some clients specifically ask for it.
Reviving a Favorite Piece

Many of the items customers bring in carry a lot of sentimental value, from hand-me-downs to pieces they’ve loved for years, Masaki said.
He takes each piece stitch by stitch, carefully bringing it back to life.
There’s something really heartwarming about it.
Bringing Japan’s Sustainable Philosophy to Denver

Masaki plans to focus more on remakes and upcycling, sharing Japan’s ‘Mottainai’ philosophy (the idea of valuing and taking care of things) with people here in the U.S. His work reflects a warm desire to bring Japan’s values to Denver and pass them on into the future.
In a world full of things we don’t always notice, Japan’s Mottainai culture reminds us that taking care of what we love is a truly sustainable choice.
That beloved item in your closet might be ready for its next chapter. Why not give it a fresh start?
